SPKC English Debating – Heading to the Championship!

2013-05-20

It has been a fantastic year for English Debating at SPKC!
I. NESTA/ SCMP Hong Kong Schools’ championship- Senior form
Our Senior Team of Sarah Tse [4L] Natalie Cheung [5L] and Isaac Sham [5P] narrowly lost to Diocesan Boys’ School in the Sing Tao quarter-final 2-1 in March but have made the final of the 14th NESTA/ SCMP Hong Kong Schools’ championship to be held at City U on June 27.
They defeated a very good St Stephen’s College team 2-1 on May 15.

II. NESTA/ SCMP Hong Kong Schools’ championship- Junior form
Our Junior Team of Saturnia Hung [3P], Michelle Lo[3F] and Sherry Au[3P] also won their semi-final match against the S4 students of Carmel Pak U Secondary School on May 10 and will hopefully progress directly to the Final but may have to face a play off because of the unusual situation of having 3 teams reaching this final stage of the Competition.
III. Hong Kong Schools’ Debating Council Competition
SPKC also entered a mixed team of Juniors and Seniors in the Hong Kong Schools’ Debating Council Competition at Yew Chung International School in March.

This was a great challenge as they had to perform 4 debates in one day in the World Schools’ style format, two of which were impromptu which meant having only 50 minutes to prepare a debate on an unknown topic, then speak for 6 minutes each. The team rose to the challenge magnificently and performed well against much older opponents mainly from International Schools in Hong Kong.
Glenn Li [5G] and Isaac Sham have also been running a regular training programme for S1 and S2 budding debaters at lunchtimes in English Zone and have been doing a great job.
The future looks bright for English debating at SPKC !
