Fostering Global Connections

2025-06-16

In late May, Ms Jovi Ma, Ms Josie Castillo, and Principal Mr. William Lee joined a university tour to Australia alongside dedicated educators from Direct Subsidy Scheme (DSS) schools. This meaningful initiative not only strengthened academic links with leading Australian universities but also served as a heartening journey of reconnection with Pooikeinians in the Southern Hemisphere.

Our visits to institutions across Queensland and Sydney offered insights into the offerings of 11 esteemed universities, including the University of Queensland and the University of Sydney. We had the opportunity to engage in professional dialogue with academics, admissions teams and education partners. Each university showcased unique strengths and flexible study pathways. Notable takeaways included an increasing emphasis on work-integrated learning, customised support for international students, and multiple accessible entry routes for both HKDSE and NLC graduates. A particularly memorable highlight was witnessing DSSSC formalise ties through Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) with some of the universities—a promising step that paves more direct pathways for our students and strengthens our academic partnerships.

A heartening moment came through reconnecting with Pooikeinians in Australia. We were especially delighted to reunite with Mr Tom Derbyshire, our former NET. The fond memories we shared in the reunion were proof that strong bonds endure over time and distance. Most touching of all was seeing our alumni, once young learners on their LEWOWA journeys, now emerging as confident, articulate young adults who are excelling in their respective areas of expertise. Their growth and transformation filled us with immense pride.

Equally enriching were the collegial exchanges with principals and teachers from our sister DSS schools. These thoughtful conversations sparked fresh ideas about curriculum innovation and educational aspirations. We return with renewed inspiration and look forward to more opportunities for professional exchange as well as strengthened student support in the years to come.
