Harvest Lab: Growing Vegetables, Growing Students

2026-01-15

On the Lower Ground Floor (LG/F) of our school, a new green space has taken root—Harvest Lab, our hydroponic smart farm and indoor planting laboratory. More than a place to grow vegetables, Harvest Lab is designed to grow something equally important: students’ curiosity, skills, and confidence.

The name “Harvest Lab” carries two meanings. First, it celebrates the harvest of veggies—fresh produce cultivated on campus through modern indoor farming. At the same time, it represents the harvest of students’ growth: every seed planted becomes an opportunity for students to develop knowledge, responsibility, and a stronger sense of purpose. Second, “Lab” describes how learning happens here. Students do not simply follow a fixed formula; they learn through trial and error, testing ideas, observing results, adjusting conditions, and improving outcomes—just like real scientists and innovators.

Harvest Lab operates under the Farmunity Project, which aims to equip students with hydroponic farming technology, entrepreneurial skills, and a serving heart. Students participate in the full growing cycle—from sowing and daily care to monitoring and harvesting—while gaining STEAM-related knowledge in biology, environmental protection, and sustainable agriculture. Through hands-on practice, they learn how plants can thrive without soil, supported by carefully managed water, nutrients, and indoor growing conditions.

The lab also strengthens teamwork and communication, as students coordinate tasks and learn that consistent care and shared responsibility are essential for success.

Most importantly, Harvest Lab connects learning with real community impact. Part of the vegetables harvested will be donated to low-income families in the Shatin District, turning student effort into meaningful service. Another portion will be sold to business partners and social enterprises, giving students authentic experience in planning, quality control, and responsible collaboration.

Harvest Lab is not just a room with plants—it is a learning ecosystem. Here, each harvest is more than a basket of greens; it is evidence of growth, service, and student potential.
